Summer is a great time to get out and do some good. Following are opportunities for active stewardship in the Durham community.

Durham Community Food Pantry

Two service opportunities

Food Delivery: Holy Cross volunteers are neeeded to deliver non-perishable items donated at Holy Cross to the Catholic Charities Durham Community Food Pantry. Volunteers can sign up to help on a rotational schedule. They will pick up the food items on Tuesdays from Holy Cross between 8:30 AM and 9:30 AM and deliver them to the food pantry between 10 AM and 12 Noon. (Volunteers could come to 8 AM Mass and pickup/deliver the food items after Mass.)

Assisting Durham Food Pantry Staff: Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM to assist in various tasks at the Durham Food Pantry. Volunteers ages 9 to 18 are welcome, but they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Duties of the volunteers

  • Meeting with families to verify information in the computer database
  • Assembling food boxes
  • Assembling food orders
  • Carrying food orders to clients’ cars
  • Loading and unloading trucks.

Durham Public Schools Summer Meals Program

Volunteers are need at the T. A. Grady Recreation Center Summer Meal Site, Mondays through Fridays, June 17 through August 2. 

This USDA summer program ensures that children ages 1-18 continue to receive nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and snacks during long school vacations when they do not have access to school meals

Duties of the volunteers: Serve meals from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Volunteer readers serve from 12:15 p.m to 1 p.m. Volunteers do not have to serve every day. Volunteer applications are required.

Families Moving Forward

Duties of the volunteers: Volunteers are needed to join our cohort congregations, Epworth Methodist Church and Calvary Baptist Church, in serving dinner and providing childcare on Monday, June 17 and Tuesday, June 18. Dinner service is 5:15 pm to 6:30 pm. Childcare service is 6:15 pm to 7:30 pm. Carpooling from Holy Cross parking lot is available. Volunteers are also needed to provide food on Tuesday. Food should be delivered to the church by 4:15 pm.
