A Special Request from our First Communicants

Requesting donations for their service project

Do you have gently used luggage taking up storage space? Or extra toiletry items - or stuffed animals that need a new home?

No, our youngsters are not planning a get-away, but they are getting ready for the service project that they'll be working on May 5th as part of their preparation for First Communion. And they are asking for your help, so that they can help young children living with homelessness or in foster care.

Holy Cross children preparing for First Communion complete a service project as part of their retreat. This year, the 10 First Communicants decided they would like their service project to be something that benefits other children; specifically, those who are homeless or in foster care. Frequently, these children are moved from one place to another without advanced warning and end up packing their few belongs in a garbage bag, said Jessica Ganao, their catechist.

In talking with those who help youth in foster care, she learned that luggage is the biggest need. "Many times, they leave with just what is on their back," Ganao said.

As a group, the communicants decided to do something about that. They are requesting donations of gently used luggage - large enough for three or four changes of clothing and toiletries (the size of a carry-on bag or larger) - and a few stuffed animals. The toiletry items requested are tooth brushes (individually packed), tooth paste, soap, deodorant and shampoo.

The Holy Cross First Communion class - ages seven to 13 - will create toiletry packets from the donated supplies during their retreat on May 5. The stuff animals will be an extra item, to provide a bit of comfort.

Please place donations in a box marked for this project in the gathering space before May 5. The box will probably be along the wall with the doors leading to the multipurpose room.

Your support of this children's initiative helps to reinforce the values they are learning as they continue their faith formation. Please keep these children and all our youth in your prayers.
