Bishop Cancels All Masses Until Further Notice

Holy Cross is following diocesan guidelines, cancelling masses and Stations of the Cross

With the evolving Caronavirus situation, Bishop Zarama has issued new instructions regarding Mass and other services for the Diocese of Raleigh. Holy Cross is following these new instructions.

A Message from the Diocese of Raleigh

Bishop Luis, in collaboration with his executive staff, continue to monitor information from national and local health officials, as to necessary next steps with respect to the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Following is an update to the recent response measures.

Important note: Please continue to monitor your email for updates and thank you for maintaining patience and calm during this rapidly evolving health crisis.

Celebration of Mass in the Diocese of Raleigh

Weekend Masses: As you know, in light of the March 14th Executive Order by Governor, Bishop Luis dispensed the obligation for the faithful to attend Sunday Mass in the Diocese of Raleigh until further notice.

Daily Mass: While the above directive by the Bishop did not pertain to weekday Masses, Bishop Luis is now directing that daily Masses be suspended until further notice. This directive is based on updated guidance from US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the President and his public health advisors, urging all in our country to observe social distancing, avoiding gatherings of 10 or more.  While this step is certainly a sacrifice in the sacramental life in this local Church, it is certainly a way, in the interest of public health and out of charity to all our brothers and sisters, that we can contribute as Catholics to stop any community spread of the virus and foster the restoration of public health.

Reconciliation and Penance Liturgies: Bishop Luis asks pastors to cancel all planned communal parish or parish grouping reconciliation liturgies. Pastors are asked to celebrate the sacrament individually with the penitent, insuring not only adequate distancing, but also privacy. Additionally, pastors may employee the priestly assistance of other brother priests on set date(s) and time(s) to attend to the numbers of faithful wanting to receive the sacrament.

Scheduled Confirmation Masses: The Office of the Bishop will be in contact with pastors regarding any Masses that will be cancelled, along with further information on the celebration of the sacrament.

Other Diocesan Liturgies: Currently, no decisions have been made regarding the celebration of Chrism Mass, the Triduum liturgy or the 8th Grade Baccalaureate Mass.

Broader Parish and Community Impact

To attend to individuals and parishes who are already experiencing the economic impact of this national emergency, Bishop Luis has asked that, in collaboration with Catholic Charities, our Diocesan finance leadership and our advisory bodies, planning begin as to how current and future needs of our parishes and communities impacted by this health crisis may be best addressed.

For all who are suffering, compromised, displaced, and experiencing the frightening impact of this crisis, let us join in asking the intercession of our Diocesan and national patroness, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, and remember Her faith in God, whose power casts down the mighty, lifts up the lowly and fills the hungry with good things.

Impact on Diocese of Raleigh Catholic Schools

The NC Governor’s Executive Order also directed the immediate closing of all public schools for a minimum of two weeks. The Bishop directed all of our Catholic schools to comply with this order. The Catholic Schools Office continues to monitor the impact on our schools and on March 16 sent a memo to school principals and administrators outlining additional guidance and recommendations for temporary at-home learning plans and other administrative concerns prompted by this situation.

Catholic Center Closed to Visitors Effective Immediately

Effective immediately, the Catholic Center will be closed to visitors. This includes access to Tuesday and Thursday daily Masses, which have been suspended at this time.

The administrative offices of the Diocese of Raleigh will be accessible only for critical onsite functions and mail delivery. Essential personnel will be available onsite or remotely, reachable by phone, and have remote access to databases, email and other mission critical information. All employees are urged to work from home to the extent possible until further notice. Our primary goal is to keep our employees healthy so that they may continue to serve parishes and parishioners. We encourage pastors to also consider limiting gatherings, meetings, etc. at their parish and to implement work-from-home options to the extent possible.

Addendum from Holy Cross

Thank you for maintaining patience and calm during this rapidly evolving health crises. Thank you also for your prayers for the health of the afflicted and those who care for them.

  • "Please pray for each other, especially for those who are ill or afraid

  • "Please pray for healthcare professionals and for those whose daily lives are impacted by this situation.

  • "Please also pray that our actions reflect to others the goodness of God and that together we can give His strength to all those who are suffering and burdened by this situation."
