Introducing Fr. Daniel Pal

Beginning the next chapter

Fr. Daniel Pal, OFM, at Holy Cross SanctuaryIt’s been nine days since I arrived in Durham, and I’m writing these words to introduce myself to the parishioners of Holy Cross in Durham, North Carolina.

Let’s start.

My name is Daniel Pal, and I was born in Romania. Romania is known by Americans who have heard about Dracula and his old dark castle in a beautiful area called Transylvania, and also Nadia Comaneci, the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10.0 at the Olympic Games.

I grew up in a Catholic family in a town named Sabaoani, located in northeast Romania. My biological family lives in the town. My mom is retired and my father passed away 17 years ago. I have a brother and a sister; both are married and have children. I am the oldest. I keep in touch with them every week using modern technology, and with my father through prayer.

Learning languages wasn’t my top priority when I was studying. That began by causality. One day, I entered into the convent’s library and I took out a book about Saint Maximilian Kolbe; it was in Spanish. After many years, I started to learn English and my training in that continues. For example, today a lady has taught me a new word  – decorum. I like traveling and learning about different cultures and traditions.

I was ordained a priest 20 years ago, on June 29, 2000, with 17 other candidates. It was an unforgettable moment, being surrounded by family and friends. Looking back, I can see the hand of God in my whole formation. I didn’t have a vision or dream saying to me that I had to choose this life and follow these directions. Sometimes, it’s enough to take a risk. My formation was in Romania. I started in 1991 and two years later, I said my first vows. After another six years, I professed my solemn vows.

As a priest, I have served most of the time outside of my province. My first assignment was with the Saint Elisabeth province in Arad, Romania, close to its border with Hungary, where I had a wonderful experience. Then I served in the Mother of God of Montserrat province in Spain, and now I serve in the Our Lady of Angels province in the USA.

I have been living here in the U.S. for six years. My first contact with American friars was in Chicopee, Mass., where I started learning English. My second assignment was in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, serving in the Saint Lucie Catholic Church.

Now I’m here at Holy Cross in Durham, where I begin to write with you the next chapter of my history.

With love,
Fr. Daniel Pal, OFM, Conv.
