Lent: Opportunities to Make a Difference through Social Action

Opportunities to serve and to learn

“The measure of the greatness of a society is found in the way it treats those most in need, those who have nothing apart from their poverty.” – Pope Francis

Lent – in addition to abstinence, fasting and prayer – is a good time to explore opportunities to help those in most need. This page on the U.S Conference of Catholic Bishop’s website provides highlights of the Church’s teachings on social justice.

The Holy Cross Book Club is currently reading a book about how one woman, who grew up in the turmoil of World War One, lived a life committed to serving those in need. The book, “Love is the Measure,” explores the life and legacy of Dorothy Day, an American journalist, social activist, and Catholic convert who co-founded the Catholic Worker newspaper, which spawned a movement of houses of hospitality and farming communes that has been replicated throughout the United States – including one in Durham – and other countries. It’s not too late to join. View details here

Holy Cross has a strong history of involvement in community organizations that minister to the needs of others and strive to make Durham a strong community. Two of those are Durham Congregations in Action (DCIA) - http://www.dcia.org/) - and Durham CAN – Durham Congregations, Associations and Neighborhoods (Durham CAN). View their websites for upcoming events and watch for notices from Ava Thompson, coordinator of the Justice, Peace and Human Concerns Commission at Holy Cross.
