Meals resume for Durham children, other Community Updates

Holy Cross parishioners in action

In the Durham community

Durham Public Schools resumed feeding children and families on April 16. Meals are available two days a week. Sites and times are at this website. Please help spread the word about this to families you know would benefit.

Catholic Charities has resumed distributing food to its clients through the Durham Community Food Pantry. Help support their efforts by volunteering or making a financial donation. Lori and Eric Crump are among those who have helped recently to distribute food, using a new process that assures safe distancing. View volunteer roles and other ways to help

Volunteers helping with the Holy Cross Sharing Garden, which grows vegetable primarily for Catholic Charities and includes beds rented households for their use, have been busy the past few weeks, with crops now growing in many of the sharing and rented beds. Teresa and Liz Odera are among those who got their beds planted and then made great progress in laying sand in the walking paths between the garden beds. Check it out next time you're at church. Contact to ask about opportunities to volunteer or rent a bed.

Families Moving Forward (FMF) in Durham continues to serve families in transition, while following stringent health and safety protocols, reports Elizabeth Deshaies, who coordinates Holy Cross volunteers for this ministry. The health protocols led to suspension of FMF’s usual meal program for their guests. FMF now has partnered with Tom Meyer’s Love & Nourish project which provides three healthy meals each day.

A day’s worth of meals costs approximately $180 for the 51 guests currently receiving meals. FMF has written grant applications that should cover some of their operating costs but to be sure they have sufficient funds for all costs, they are requesting support from congregations and groups. Donations can be made by check or online.

  • To donate by check, please enter Meals/COVID-19 Holy Cross in the memo line of your check and send to Families Moving Forward, PO Box 25426, Durham NC, 27702.
  • Online donations can be made here:!/donation/checkout. Click DONATE ONCE at the top of the form, and click on the amount you wish to donate. Enter Meals/COVID-19 Holy Cross in the COMMENT section.

FMF also welcomes toys, puzzles and games that their guests can enjoy in their rooms. The team also thanks those who are providing prayers of support and encouragement for the Families Moving Forward team and clients.

An opportunity to help COVID-19 teams

Elizabeth Deshaies also shared a message from a colleague at work, about a program called RVs 4 MDs. It provides medical professionals a place to stay while keeping their families safe from coronavirus contamination. Read about it here.

In the Parish, in the Diocese

This is a difficult time for many households financially, but Holy Cross parishioners are reminded that the parish also needs to continue meeting its financial obligations. Please continue submitting your parish support via Online Giving or by check to Holy Cross at 2438 S. Alston Avenue, Durham, 27713. Parish staff picked up mail regularly and process checks that are received promptly. Consider signing up for or updating your regular donations to Holy Cross through the parish's Online Giving program. Create or log into your account here.

Please also remember to make your donation to the Diocese of Raleigh Bishop's Annual Appeal. Donations to this annual appeal provide vital support throughout the diocese, and the need this year is greater than ever before. Read about programs supported by the BAA here

Global Impact

Lent has ended, but Operation Rice Bowl continues to collect donations that support its vital global programs. Please consider making a donation via the parish's online giving program or by check to Holy Cross, with Operation Rice Bowl in the memo line. The parish will assure your donation is sent to Operation Rice Bowl to support their programs.
