Palms and a Holy Week Message from Fr. Bart

Pray for one another as we approach Holy Week, in the midst of a pandemic

Palm Sunday Distribution of Palms, reverse lane entering parking lot

This Sunday, we begin Holy Week with Passion (Palm) Sunday, an annual celebration of the Paschal Mystery: the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

As we well know, it will be very different this year because of the coronavirus. We have been required to stay at home and avoid close proximity to each other. This is necessary and difficult enough, but now it affects our faith life, our coming together as a community to celebrate this great mystery of our salvation, the Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil.

Although we will have an opportunity to watch these beautiful celebrations on our computers and televisions, it is not the same as being present and witnessing them. That said, you are encouraged to participate virtually by viewing the services at Holy Name of Jesus Cathedral. (Details here)

As I reflect on this, I came to the realization that this will be the first time in my life, going way back to when I was an altar server, that I will not be able to celebrate the ceremonies of Holy Week. This is probably the same for many of you.

As a priest, it is particularly difficult for me that I will not be able to preside as your pastor and celebrate with you the Lord’s Supper, with the washing of the feet ceremony, the Passion of our Lord and the adoration of the Cross, and Easter Vigil, the Resurrection of the Lord. As painful as this is, it is essential that we avoid gathering together, in person, as a community, thereby helping our community and our country to fight this pandemic.

As we watch these ceremonies virtually, let us think of our Holy Cross community and pray for one another.

Also, if you would like to pick up palms for your home this weekend, I have blessed them and they will be distributed at the entrance to the church, 9:30 AM - 12:00 Noon this Sunday, April 5.

Please enter the parking lot via the 'exit' lane and circle 'round to the front of the church, so that the driver's side of the car will be at the entrance of the church. Toni Hall and Frank Boone will be on site, guiding traffic and distributing the palms to you through your car window.

I wish all of you a Holy and Grace-filled Holy Week and a Blessed and Joyful Easter.
