February News Update for the Holy Cross Community

A Weekend Reflection: "Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed. ... Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.” - Mark 1:35, 38

EXPLORING ST. TERESA OF AVILA'S INTERIOR CASTLE

Join the parish Book Club’s ongoing discussion of St. Teresa of Avila’s writings in her book, The Interior Castle. The group got through Chapter 2 last time and will continue the discussion with Chapter 3 on Monday, Feb. 12, 6:30 - 8 pm. at Holy Cross.

New participants are welcome. The discussion will be interesting even if you have not had a chance to read the book. It’s a great opportunity to learn about St. Teresa and decide if you want to buy a book. The book club may continue for several more sessions, to fit in all five chapters.

LENTEN OPPORTUNITIES

Lent begins with Ash Wednesday - it’s on Valentine’s Day this year! - Make yours a Living Lent that deeps your relationship with Christ. Following are excerpts from a recent parish News & Announcements blog post.

  • Sign up this weekend Live Lent small group! Read Deacon Phil’s remarks about the value and benefits of faith-based small group discussion programs like ‘Live Lent’ in his latest blog post
  • Shrove Tuesday, February 13: Festivities and lots of food! Plan to enjoy this last evening before Lent at Holy Cross this year, startiing at 6 p.m.
  • Ash Wednesday, February 14: Mass and ash distribution will be at 8 a.m. As Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, the liturgy of the word and ash distribution will be at 12:15 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Plan to participate at Stations of the Cross and Benediction, Fridays at 7 p.m.; children welcome!
  • Parish Revival, March 6-8, led by Brother Douglas McMillan, OFM, Conv.
  • Help those in need. On Ash Wednesday, pick up a Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl container; use it to gather your spare change during Lent. Then, convert that change into a check and bring your donation in an envelope marked Rice Bow when you come for Mass on Easter weekend.
  • Make time for personal reflection. A supply of Little Black Book Lenten devotional booklets is available at the church. Take one home.
