Something Sublime

Holy Cross Gospel Choir director Gloria Burton discusses liturgy and music

Photo of Gloria Burton, by Shaun BalesGloria Burton, director of the gospel choir at Holy Cross's 10 AM Mass, is among choir directors featured in an NC Catholic magazine story about church choirs in the Diocese of Raleigh.

"At Holy Cross in Durham, its distinct character as an African American parish continues to shape its worship and ministries," writes author Rachelle D. Garbarine.

"It’s known for its upbeat, intimate and emotionally-rich gospel music, though its two choirs also lead the congregation in songs, ranging from spirituals to contemporary and traditional Catholic music.

“I tell the choir that they need to make the words they sing transfer to and touch people,” she says in the article. “We are worshipping and praising God through our music, which helps reveal him to us in amazing ways.”

Music at Holy Cross's Saturday Vigal Mass is more traditional, led by Sr. Janet Schemmel.
