Two messages ... from the diocese, and from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops

Thanksgiving Day offers a time to reflect on the blessings in our own households and to learn about the joy others experience through the help of others.

Last Saturday, nearly 20 people -  youth to seniors - met at Holy Cross's multipurpose room to package up fixings for 65 Thanksgiving Day dinners for families receiving assistance through Catholic Charities in Durham. Our team completed the task in less than 30 minutes, a record time for this activity that the parish has done for quite a number of years now. This week, the families who received those packages are enjoying a good, hot meal with their families and friends. Thanks to all who made this possible, both with financial contriutions and making time to come in early on a Saturday morning to prepare the food bundles.

Following is a story about a Raleigh Diocese household that is celebrating in a new home, thanks to the support from Catholic Charities, followed by a message from the U.S. Conference on Catholic Bishops, about those who are in tenuous situation as immigrants and refugees. Let us also keep them in our prayers.

Tiffany Hicks-Bey and her family are celebrating Thanksgiving this year in a new home in Brunswick County, with plenty of "space for everyone to 'do their thing',” she said. Read her full story here on the diocesan website (scroll down to her story).

From Galveston, Texas, Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), offers a Thanksgiving Day message to the nation with special gratitude for the gift of immigrants and refugees. Read the full statement here

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
