Time for the (Virtual) Durham CROP Hunger Walk

Solicit pledges for the activity you will do in support of this cause

The 2020 Durham CROP Hunger Walk is still on for this Sunday, April 5, but it’ll be a virtual experience this year, due to CDC recommendations for controlling the spread of COVID-19. [If you know all about it and just want to donate, click here.]

What does "a virtual experience" mean? Rather than gather and walk as a group, this year’s team members are encouraged to select an alternative activity, to solicit pledges for the Crop Walk based on what they’re doing, and to share their virtual ‘walk’ on the Holy Cross and Durham CROP Walk Facebook pages to encourage donations.

Why participate?

Durham CROP Hunger Walk donations are used to support hunger-alleviation programs. Money raised is split between two organizations: 75 percent goes to Church World Service and 25 percent stays in Durham County and is used by Durham Congregations in Action (DCIA) to help our neighbors in need.  In order to best serve the most vulnerable in our county, DCIA allocates its 25 percent to 12 hunger-fighting agencies in Durham. Click here to read about those agencies.

Please consider participating, as a virtual walker, a donor, or both.

Be a virtual participant

FIRST: Set up a Walk page online (if you haven't already). Register with the Holy Cross Catholic Church site here. That way donations can be made by check or credit card. Type Holy Cross Catholic Church in the team name field to get to our parish account, where you can register as a walker from a tab at the top of that page.

SECOND: Decide on an alternative activity – something that will enable you to maintain social distancing as you ‘walk/work’ in solidarity with the poor who benefit from the programs supported by the Durham CROP Hunger Walk. (See a few ideas below.)

THIRD: Let people you know (via your social sites or direct contact) that you are doing this and invite them to make a donation to the Durham CROP Hunger Walk via your account online. Click here to access the site for donations. They should enter your name when they get t the page for the Holy Cross Catholic Church team, so they can donate to your account.

FOURTH: If you have a Durham CROP Walk t-shirt from prior years, wear it and take a photo while engaged in your CROP Walk activity. This year's t-shirts will still be available Friday, April 3, from 2-4 PM and Saturday, April 4, from 9:30 AM – 12 noon, at the trailer behind St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1200 W Cornwallis Rd.

FIFTH: Post photos and comments about your virtual activity to your social accounts, using these tags: #EndHungerNow, #VirtualDurnmCROPWalk, #HolyCrossChurchDurham and include a link to the Holy Cross team’s fundraising page: https://www.crophungerwalk.org/durhamnc/Donate.

Stumped about what to do for your virtual service project?

Here are a few ideas.

  • Hike on a local trail where social distancing is possible, and say a prayer as you hike, for those in need, the end of the coronovirus pandemic, those who are suffering or who have died from it, or the needs of your family, our parish, the world.
  • Can't get out & about? Pray at home.
  • Help with the Holy Cross Sharing Garden.

Sharing Garden Options

Send an email message to garden@holycrossdurham.org to schedule a time with Deacon Phil or Anna Rzewnicki to work together (while maintaining a safe distance; there's plenty of room in the garden).

Tasks include:

  • Help build new raised beds (bring your own hammer; nails and boards are provided).
  • Fill the new raised beds with soil (from bags located on site)
  • Plant seeds in the new beds and water
  • Pull a few weeds from exisiting beds
  • Move gravel to the new garden paths, to create an easy walking surface.

Beyond Holy Cross:

  • Contact one of the Durham CROP Walk local recipient agencies to see how you can help with their changing volunteer needs.
  • Come up with an idea of your own and share it via your social sites
  • Record yourself talking about why the CROP Hunger Walk is important to you. Post it on Facebook using #EndHungerNow and #VirtualDurmCROPWalk. (The National CWS office may share it! Remember to wear your T Shirts! Make sure to tag your friends and potential donors and include your personal/team fundraising page link.) You can also send an email to communications@holycrossdurham.org, and parish communications will post to social for you.

A number of the agencies that Holy Cross has worked with over the years are among those benefiting from this annual walk to eradicate hunger.

Here's a link to the page listing all local the agencies that benefit from the CROP Walk; it includes a number of agencies that Holy Cross has worked with over the years, and what support the parish provides.

  • Families Moving Forward: Serving meals and providing childcare, quarterly
  • Urban Ministries: Providing casseroles
  • Food Bank of Central NC: Providing packaged food donated by parishioners and produce from the Holy Cross Sharing Garden to the Durham Community Catholic Charities Food Pantry.

Following are links to two videos in which recipient agencies share their stories.

  1. Families Moving Forward https://fmfnc.org/stories
  2. Partners for Youth Opportunity https://pyopportunity.org/about-pyo-video-series/

Let’s keep holding each other in the light. Stay healthy and inspired. It is more important now than it has ever been.
