At the end of each academic year, Holy Cross celebrates the achievements of our youth and awards academic scholarships for those pursuing college degrees. Following are this year’s scholarship recipients and a summary of our graduating students’ academic achievements.

Student Academic Achievements

The following students were celebrated during Student Recognition Sunday held on June 10. Students not listed may download and submit their completed student recognition forms to Their information will be added to this blog post.

Anthony Addae-Kumi Jr. graduated from Green Hope High School, where he was active in rugby, track and field. He will be attending Appalachian State University majoring in political science, concentrating in pre-law and psychology.

Michael Boadu graduated from Voyager Academy in Durham, where he was on the varsity basketball team. He will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro majoring in physical therapy.

Manissa Boykin graduated summa cum laude from the North Carolina State University with a bachelor of science degree in sport management. She is currently completing an internship with Sports Properties Inc. and plans to prepare for graduate school.

Joche Cedeno graduated from the Middle College High School at Durham Technical Community College. She was a member of the National Honor Society and was recognized as a North Carolina Academic Scholar and a Presidential Excellence Award recipient. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Poetry Out Loud, and a volunteer at the Durham South Regional Library and Ronald McDonald House. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro majoring in nursing.

Gian Gibboney graduated Cardinal Gibbons High School, where his activities included the Composition Club, Book Club, soccer, piano, singing and drama. He received National Honors Society Hispanic Scholarship Fund awards and will attend the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill majoring in biology.

Ikechukuia Nwabinwe graduated from the Josephine Dobbs Clement Early College High School. Ikechukuia was a member of the African Club, the Association of Students for a Better Africa (ASFABA), and a senior ambassador. Ikechukuia received a $2,000 merit scholarship and will be attending the University of North Carolina – Greensboro majoring in business and finance.

Uju Udemadu graduated from the City of Medicine Academy in Durham, with dual enrollment in Durham Tech Community College’s Career and College Promise Program. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, majoring in psychology, and aspires to be a physician. In high school, she was in the National Honor Society, Varsity Soccer, (Future Business Leaders of America (FLBA) member and community service chair, and member of HOSA (future health professionals student association) and the Women’s Empowerment Club.

Steven Merrick Watts graduated from The School for Creative Studies in Durham and will be attending Wake Technical Community College. His goal is to earn his degree in automotive design and design cars through 3-D design. In high school, he was on the soccer and cross country teams; basketball, cycling, Lego master, robotics and track clubs.
